Retopologized Bakery Scans: From Crusty Loaves to Production-Ready 3D Assets

Photogrammetry captures everything that makes baked goods look irresistible—crackled crusts, airy crumb, and the irregular shapes you only get from real dough.
But straight-from-scan meshes aren’t built for a modern pipeline. Excessive polygon counts, uneven topology, and heavy textures slow everything down.

That’s where retopology earns its keep: it restructures dense, chaotic geometry into clean, efficient meshes while preserving the baked-in realism.

This article showcases several retopologized bakery models created from real 3D scans available at 3D.sk.

From Bakery Scans to Optimized Meshes

Each asset started as a detailed photogrammetric capture, rich in micro-detail—from blistered ciabatta ridges to the glossy swirl of laminated pastry.
The goal: keep that fidelity while converting multi-million-poly scans into nimble, clean meshes that slide into any DCC or game engine.

After careful cleanup and retopology, every model features quad-based surfaces, consistent UVs, and smooth edge flow—ideal for baking maps, PBR texturing, and real-time rendering in Unreal, Unity, or Blender. Bundle specs and per-item data below reflect the real files.

Bakery Scanning — Examples from 3D.sk

A small selection of the baked goods included in the collection (each shipped as high-poly + low-poly with ZTL source and 16K textures):

  • Whole Grain Ciabatta 3D Scan — Rustic crust and flour dusting retained, retopologized for clean shading.
    High: ~2,500,000 polys • Low: ~9,000 polys • ZTL: ~1,200,000 polys • Textures: 4× PSB at 16K.
  • Puff Pastry Snails with Custard & Raisins — Laminated layers and shiny custard read crisply even at LOD distances.
    High: ~5,500,000 polys • Low: ~21,000 polys • ZTL: ~2,700,000 polys • Textures: 4× PSB at 16K.
  • Poppy-Seed Crescent Roll — Seeded surface with baked sheen, rebuilt for consistent normal response.
    High: ~3,400,000 polys • Low: ~13,000 polys • ZTL: ~1,700,000 polys • Textures: 4× PSB at 16K.
  • Savory Cheese Pagatche Cake — Flaky top, porous interior; topology guided along natural layers to reduce shading artifacts.
    High: ~5,413,000 polys • Low: ~21,000 polys • ZTL: ~2,706,000 polys • Textures: 4× PSB at 16K.
  • Mini Baguette — Elongated form with crisp scoring; low-poly retains the silhouette for real-time shots.
    High: ~3,397,000 polys • Low: ~13,000 polys • ZTL: ~1,698,000 polys • Textures: 4× PSB at 16K.
  • Braided Brioche Bread — Interlaced strands and glossy bake captured with high dynamic detail, now with clean quad flow.
    High: ~4,000,000 polys • Low: ~18,000 polys • ZTL: ~2,000,000 polys • Textures: 4× PSB at 16K.

Each asset includes OBJ and ZTL for wide compatibility (ZBrush, Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine, Unity) and ships with ultra-high-resolution textures for maximum realism.

Why Clean Topology Matters for Food Assets

Retopology turns raw scans into dependable production assets. With structured edge flow and unified UVs you get:

Retopology turns raw scans into dependable production assets. With structured edge flow and unified UVs you get:

  • Real-time performance without throwing away the tactile realism
  • Predictable shading and baking, especially on layered or seeded crusts
  • Efficient UVs and faster texturing, ideal for LODs and variant creation
  • Consistent deformation and normals, so highlights roll correctly across curved surfaces

The result: models that look hand-baked but render like they’re made for engines.

Wrap-Up

This bakery collection proves that even complex, irregular food shapes can be converted into streamlined, production-ready assets without losing their appetizing detail. From airy ciabatta to braided brioche, every scan keeps its character while meeting the technical bar for games, cinematics, and visualization.
